Exhibition Celebrates Cork-Brussels Link As Part Of ‘The Gathering’
Today marks the launch of the ‘Like A Tree’ photographic exhibition at Cork Airport which will continue until Sunday, June 23rd. Fittingly, the Irish launch coincides with today’s marking of ‘Europe Day’ and follows a very successful run at the Halles Saint Gery in Brussels.
The ‘Like a Tree’ exhibition was showcased in parallel with the recent Irish in Europe Art & Photo Exhibition – “Cork Meets Brussels - Brussels Meets Westport”, highlighting the close links between Ireland and Belgium.
All of the photographs were taken by Belgian photographer, Luc Teper and curated by Ken Buckley of The Gallery in Kinsale. It is being hosted by Cork Airport as part of its commitment to, and support of ‘the Gathering’ 2013. The photographs were taken over a two year period and highlight the richness and beauty of trees in our everyday environment. The contrasts, natural beauty and use of light are stunning and will certainly leave you with a lasting desire to plant a tree in your garden or local park!
The photographer captures a number of tree varieties native to the Brussels region. Brussels is considered a green city, where trees are a key aesthetical part of the urban landscape, just as they are in Cork. Indeed, Cork and Brussels share many similarities including underground canals and rivers harking back to their marshy beginnings.
Commenting on the unique nature of the exhibition, Kevin Cullinane, Marketing Manager, Cork Airport, said: “We are delighted to support this exciting exhibition, particularly in this year of ‘the Gathering’. We are also conscious of the very strong links that exist between Cork and Brussels and this stunning exhibition of Luc Teper’s photographs reinforces the importance of Brussels as a business and leisure destination, located at the very heart of Europe”.
Ken Buckley, The Gallery Kinsale and Curator of the exhibition said: This is the first time we have curated a photography exhibition and I couldn’t imagine starting at a higher level. The standard of excellence in these photographs is second to none and I would encourage all photographers, nature lovers and anyone with an interest in beautiful images to visit the exhibition at Cork Airport and enjoy Luc’s work”.
The ‘Like A Tree’ exhibition opens at Cork Airport today (May 9th) and continues until Sunday, June 23rd.
About The Irish In Europe Association
Founded in 2011, the Irish In Europe Association’s objectives include the promotion of Irish culture as a means of integration and also the promotion of cultural exchange programmes between Ireland and Belgium.
The opening of this exhibition serves as the launch of the cultural exchange programme in Ireland to celebrate the friendship that exists between Ireland and Belgium. It will also create awareness of the greater cultural and socio-economic opportunities that exist with the introduction of the Aer Lingus Direct flights between Cork and Brussels and also ensure the continuity and expansion of the service as demand for the flights grows.
